Cairn Stamina Guide: Reading Aava, Not a Bar

Cairn has no stamina bar. Your energy meter is Aava herself — her breathing, her shaking limbs, her quivering fingers, and the color of the flash when she shakes out a tired arm. Players who keep looking for a HUD number miss the warnings the game is actually giving, and fall off walls that were perfectly climbable. This guide maps every stamina signal to its correct response, compares the three recovery methods, and covers the consumables that lower your drain. All mechanics are verified against the release version (January 29, 2026, PC and PS5) via the developers' official tips and community guides.

The Warning Ladder: Aava's Signals and What to Do

Stamina failure in Cairn is never sudden — it is a ladder of escalating signals you climbed past. Learn each rung and its correct response, and falls stop being random.

The Three Recovery Methods Compared

Every stamina problem on Mount Kami is solved by one of three tools. The shake-out is free but partial, the piton is a full reset that costs an anchor, and the bivouac resets everything but only exists where the mountain allows it.

The stamina management loop: climb, read the signals, shake out when stable, reset fully at a piton, and treat every bivouac as a hard save before the next wall.

Consumables That Lower the Drain

Stamina management is also inventory management. These four consumables change how fast the tank empties and how well it refills.

Habits That Keep the Tank Full

01

Climb rest-to-rest, not start-to-summit

Scout with the zoomed-out camera (L1 / LB / Tab), mark real rest ledges, and treat each segment between them as its own short climb. Where no ledge exists, that is where a piton goes.

02

Feet first, always

Hanging off your arms is the fastest way to empty the tank. Get feet high and push; use manual limb selection (R1 / RB / Spacebar) to place the exact foot you need instead of accepting the auto-picker's suggestion.

03

Shake out early, not desperately

The shake-out works from stable positions. If you wait until fingers quiver, no position nearby is stable enough to help. Use it at the first shake, not the last.

04

Never skip a bivouac

Bivouac sites are finite and some are off the main line. Every one you pass is less rest, fewer resources, and worse odds on the next wall. Warm up, cook, tape, sleep — then climb.

FAQ

Does Cairn have a stamina bar?

No. Cairn deliberately has no traditional stamina UI. Instead you read Aava's body: slow regular breathing means she is fine, quickening breath means she is tiring, shaking limbs mean bad position or exhaustion, and quivering fingers are the final warning before a fall. Controller rumble and her voice lines ('I have zero grip', 'I'm gonna slip') reinforce the same signals.

How do I recover stamina while climbing?

Three ways. In a stable position, press Triangle (Y on Xbox, Q on PC) to shake out a tired limb — a green flash means good recovery, yellow means you need a better position soon. Clipping into a piton and going off belay fully restores stamina and opens the backpack. A bivouac camp restores everything — stamina, health, warmth — and lets you cook, drink, and repair gear.

Why won't Aava's shake-out recover her fully?

The shake-out only works well from a genuinely stable position — three limbs secure, no shaking, weight evenly distributed. On a bad stance you get the yellow flash: partial recovery at best. Look for ledges or large holds where her weight sits on her feet, shake out there, and treat any yellow flash as a warning to find a real rest spot within the next few moves.

How do chalk, food, and water affect stamina?

Chalk improves grip on your next 12 handholds, which lowers the stamina cost of each move — use it before hard sections. Hydration and energy are separate survival stats that govern how well Aava sustains effort, so keep the canteen filled and cook at bivouacs: cooked food and prepared drinks restore stamina and hydration better than raw snacks, and some recipes grant temporary buffs.

What is the best stamina habit for long walls?

Climb rest-to-rest. Scout the wall with the zoomed-out camera (L1 / LB / Tab), mark the ledges where Aava can genuinely recover, and treat each segment between them as a separate short climb. Where no natural rest exists, place a piton and use the off-belay full restore. Never let a segment end with zero margin — a climber at 20% stamina choosing the next hold is a fall waiting to happen.
