Cairn Survival Tips
Most failed climbs in Cairn are not caused by a single impossible move. They start with a sequence of small survival mistakes: pushing while cold, staying exposed because a retreat feels slow, or using recovery too late. Survival is the layer that keeps a technically sound route from turning into a ruined descent.
Three Things to Monitor Constantly
- Temperature drift, especially after long pauses on shaded walls or exposed ridges.
- Food and water timing, because late recovery usually means climbing while already behind.
- Exit quality, not just route progress. A strong ascent with a bad descent plan is still fragile.
When to Stop Pushing
Turn back when two risk factors stack at once: low stamina plus bad visibility, or cold damage plus an exposed section with no immediate shelter. Cairn rewards players who retreat one minute early far more than players who cling to a near-summit gamble.
A good retreat is not wasted progress. It is information you bring into the next attempt with better packing and clearer timing.
Survival Checklist by Phase
| Phase | Main Focus | What Saves Runs |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Pace and weather read | Arrive at the first hard section warm and unhurried. |
| Mid-route | Stamina and anchor discipline | Protect recovery windows instead of chasing speed on every move. |
| Descent | Warmth and navigation | Use spare energy and emergency supplies here, not only for the summit push. |
