Cairn Best Base Locations Tier List

Last updated: July 2, 2026

Cairn features 7 distinct biomes, each with unique resources, hazards, and building potential. Choosing where to build your main base is the single most impactful decision in the game — it determines your resource access, your exposure to hazards, and your late-game crafting options. This guide ranks all 7 biomes from S to C tier, breaks down the best resource farming locations, and catalogs every hazard with severity and counter-strategy.

Hazard Severity Guide

Every biome has a primary hazard. Knowing the severity and counter-strategy is the difference between a base that lasts decades and one that collapses in the first storm season.

Base Building Strategy by Tier

Different biomes require different base designs. S-tier biomes are forgiving — almost any layout works. C-tier biomes require specific architectural approaches to survive.

  • Mossy Plateau (S-tier): Build anywhere. The terrain is gentle, resources are everywhere, and the only threat is bandits. A standard rectangular base with 2 walls and 1 gate works perfectly.
  • Frozen Peak (S-tier): Build into the cliff face for natural insulation. The cliff walls block wind and the rock provides passive heating. Build compact — large bases lose heat too fast.
  • Coral Coast (A-tier): Build on stilts or elevated foundations. The tide flooding will destroy ground-level storage. A 3-tile elevated platform is the minimum safe height.
  • Dense Thicket (A-tier): Cut down only the trees you need. The forest provides natural cover from bandits. Build narrow, winding paths rather than wide courtyards — they are easier to defend.
  • Ash Wastes (B-tier): Build with stone only. Wood structures ignite in the heat hazard. A 4x4 stone keep is the minimum size for safe living.
  • Sunken Marsh (B-tier): Build on raised platforms. The standing water will rot wooden foundations within days. Stone or brick raised platforms are the only safe option.
  • Skyreach Cliffs (C-tier): Build small and anchored. The fall hazard means every wall must be reinforced and every path must be narrow. A 2x2 base with anchor points is the maximum safe size.

FAQ

Can I move my base to a different biome mid-game?

Yes, but it is expensive. Moving a base requires deconstructing every building (returning 50 percent of the resources), transporting all stored items (cost scales with weight), and rebuilding in the new location. For a fully built base, expect 20 to 40 hours of work and 30 percent resource loss. Most players maintain one main base and one outpost rather than fully relocating.

What is the best base size?

A 10x10 base is the sweet spot for most biomes. Smaller (6x6) feels cramped and limits your storage and crafting. Larger (20x20) is more impressive but requires 4x the building materials and is harder to defend. The 10x10 base fits 4 to 6 buildings comfortably with room for a 2x2 garden and a stockpile area.

Should I always pick the S-tier biome for my first base?

Mossy Plateau is the best first biome. It is forgiving for new players, has balanced resources, and the bandit threat teaches you base defense before you face more dangerous hazards. Once you have mastered base building and defense, expand to Frozen Peak for crystal and coal access. The C-tier Skyreach Cliffs is for end-game gold farming only — never build your main base there.

Advanced Tips

  • Build outposts, not just one base. The best long-term strategy is one main base in an S-tier biome plus 2 to 3 outposts in other biomes for specific resource chains. The Coral Coast outpost for fish, the Frozen Peak outpost for crystal, the Sunken Marsh outpost for alchemy herbs. This gives you resource security without forcing a single location to do everything.
  • Always build near water. Water access is required for cooking, drinking, and farming. Bases more than 30 tiles from a water source require expensive well construction and have lower citizen happiness. The best base spots are 5 to 15 tiles from a river or lake.
  • Check the elevation before building. A base built in a low-elevation spot will flood in rainstorms. The game does not warn you about this. Spend 5 minutes scouting the elevation before committing to a build site. The ideal elevation is mid-slope, with a downhill path for drainage and an uphill path for defense.
